Nothing to Do in Cullman?

So many times we hear the old adage that there is simply NOTHING to do in Cullman. Despite these rumors, there are in fact endless possibilities for things to do in Cullman, and we at CP&R alone offer hundreds of programs, activities, and events as well as dozens of spaces that offer plenty to do in the Cullman community. Let’s look at what there really IS to do in Cullman!

1. Take your dog to the dog park at Heritage Park
The dog park is a great outing for you and your dog and you will both surely enjoy meeting some new friends and the fresh air.
2. Go for a hike at Hurricane Creek Park
Featuring over 4 miles of hiking trails through the most pristine and gorgeous wilderness in Cullman County, the park also features favorites like Twilight Tunnel and Heaven’s Staircase
3. Take a fitness class at the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center
Take your pick with over 60 classes offered each week including target, spin, yoga, cardio party, Zumba, kids class, and more.
4. Tee off at Cross Creek Golf Course
CP&R's Cross Creek Golf Course (formerly Cullman Golf Course) offers 18 holes of some of the best greens in the area
5. Picnic at your Neighborhood Park
CP&R boasts 7 neighborhood parks including Ingle Park, Steiflemeyer Park, East Side Park, Culpepper Park, City Park, Nesmith Park, and Carol Acres Park, all equipped with green space for a picnic on a sunny day
6. Fling some discs at CP&R’s Disc Golf Course
The 18-hole course traverses Heritage Park’s entire 72-acre scene with challenging and beginner shots alike
7. Go enjoy the waterpark at the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center
CWAC’s outdoor water park features three water slides including the all new 40+ foot tall tube slide added in 2015. The facility also features a lazy river, diving boards, a child’s water play area, and much more.
8. Get out to the playground(s)
Cullman has a lot of them – Heritage Park, Ingle Park, Culpepper Park, East and West Elementary – there is no excuse to not get out and enjoy some active play with your kids
9. Go for a walk or jog on Heritage Park’s paved trails
3.5 miles of paved trails circle the perimeter of Heritage Park and are  lit for safety at night time for those who wish to exercise later in the day
10. Take an art class
CP&R offers classes in Oil Painting & Acrylics for all ages, kids after school art classes, and a Mommy & Me art class for pre-school age kids and their parents
11. Go for a mountain bike at Duck River Reservoir
Duck River currently contains 6 miles of opened mountain biking trails around the soon to be lake with over 23 miles of trails to be built by the conclusion of the project. Hiking is also allowed and encouraged along the trail
12. Take your child to a gymnastics class
CP&R offers a state of the art gymnastics center with competitive teams and recreation classes for 3 years old through high school
13. Or try out a cheerleading program
CP&R hosts the competitive Xtreme Allstars teams as well as recreation cheer and tumble classes for all ages
14. Signup for a sports league
CP&R offers dozens of sports for youth and adults alike including baseball, softball,     
t-ball, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, tennis, track and field, archery, football, soccer, swimming and diving, flag football, kickball, and more.
15. Get some swimming in on a rainy day at the Wellness & Aquatic Center
Winter weather or a rainy day is no excuse to not hit the pool – whether its for exercise lap swimming or for a fun day out, the indoor pool a the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center is opened daily year-round
16. Go shop for the freshest produce at the farmer’s market
The Festhalle Farmer’s Market is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8am-2pm from the first of May through the end of October with local fruits, veggies, and more
17. Or make your own produce at the Community Garden
Located at Nesmith Park, the garden offers 18 plots that can be rented each year from March-October. Hone your skills with gardening classes that are also offered weekly at the community garden
18. Round up a group together for an organized game at Heritage Park
The park boats fields for soccer, softball, sand volleyball, basketball, and more. The soccer fields also make a great place for pick up Ultimate Frisbee, football, or whatever game you have in mind.
19. Start working towards your health with a personal trainer at CWAC
Personal training is offered at almost any time at the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center during the day and evenings to tailor a plan for your individual needs
20. Start dancing away at the Cullman Civic Center with Ballroom Dancing Classes
Offered on a weekly basis, the Civic Center hosts both beginner and advanced classes in ballroom dancing
21. Attend one of CP&R’s dozens of festivals and events
The possibilities are endless with the Strawberry Festival, Clucknbrew, Christmas in July, the Midnight Run 5K, the Christmas Arts & Crafts Show, Community Wellness Day, Friday Nights at Festhalle, Dive-in Movies, Drive-in Movies, and a multitude of smaller events.
22. 50 or older? Try dozens of free activities at the Donald E. Green Sr. Center
Line dancing, free exercise equipment, singing groups, competitive games, Bingo, quilting, art classes, special lunches, and much more are all free programs offered daily at the center
23. Enjoy the great outdoors like you’ve never seen it with CP&R’s kayaking program
CP&R offers beginner classes, clinics to work on white water rolling, and trips down whitewater rivers including the Mulberry River, Nantahala, and Hiwassee. Classes and clinics are held inside at the Wellness & Aquatic Center
24. Camp Cullman
If you are a kid ages 5-12, this is the most fun thing to do in Cullman. The daily summer camp takes place at the Wellness & Aquatic Center and takes local trips as well as field trips to places like the Birmingham Zoo, Chattanooga Aquarium, and Coca-Cola Museum
25. Learn a new sport or activity with private lessons
CP&R offers classes and one on one sessions for adults and kids alike in golfing, archery, gymnastics, tennis, and more
26. Sign up for a special program, camp, or clinic
CP&R offers programs monthly for any interest you may have including art classes, outdoor adventure courses, free exercise in the park sessions, Mother/Daughter and Father/Son nights out, photography classes, self defense classes, free Just Play program for kids, and dozens more.
27. Fly a kite
It’s a lost art and one people of all ages can enjoy in the wide open spaces at any of our CP&R parks
28. Get together a pickup volleyball or basketball game
2 volleyball and basketball courts are located inside at the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center for usage by members and day-passers alike.


In addition to these many things to do in Cullman that happen right here in our parks and recreation department alone, there are also dozens of other fun and unique activities and things to do in Cullman including: shopping at local boutiques, larger box stores, and new developments; eating at one of our many renown restaurants from barbecue to Italian eateries; bars and night-life at places like Moe’s BBQ, Grumpy’s, and Brothers; checking out one of the many other attractions in the area such as Stoney Lonesome OHV Park, Sportsman’s Lake, the Ave Maria Grotto, or the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacraments; getting outdoors to one of our many outdoor offerings such as Smith Lake, Welti Falls, or kayaking down the Mulberry River; and so many more. So is there really nothing to do in Cullman? You can be the judge!

Heritage Park Outdoor Circuit Workout #2

The second circuit for our Heritage Park fitness equipment is here! Modify these exercises to meet your specific needs. If you wish to mix these exercises in with those that were featured in our first     post feel free to do so!  Warm-up: walk 1.5-mile loop or do Cardio Stepper for 5-10 minutes Assisted Row W: 2 sets/ 10 reps M: 2 sets/ 15 reps Squat Press W: 2 sets/10 reps M: 2 sets/ 15 reps Reverse Crunches/Leg Raises W: 2 sets/ 25 reps M: 2 sets/ 25 reps Cool down: walk 1.5-mile loop *Take a 60-90 second break between repetitions or walk to each different station as a “break” ** Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine.
